WebFort Atkinson State Historical Park. One of the earliest U.S. military posts west of the Missouri River, Fort Atkinson was established in 1820 on recommendation of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Located at Fort Calhoun, the fort was important to the early fur trade, river traffic and Indian relations. It was an active fort until 1827. WebJan 1, 2024 · This site is a short 20 minute drive northeast of St. Louis and it is a interesting look at the begining of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The visitor center is good; I highly recommend that you drive/bike/walk out on the Lewis and Clark trail to the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. The view is great!
