WebJul 29, 2024 · The color of striping and lettering on the two-tone gray scheme on passenger steam locomotives was changed from Armour Yellow to Silver Gray (the letter of instruction was dated June 2, 1949). When first used in 1946, the striping between the two tones of gray had been what UP called "Silver-Gray." Webmeans that colour photography can be misleading. Comparing against the colour of particular vehicles in the collection is also fraught with risk as there are numerous known errors. So it’s not really possible to be 100% accurate when it comes to colour, but, by all account, no two locomotives were the same colour anyway!
